A.P. Reid Insurance Stores in Dartmouth placed fourth in an annual report released by Insurance Business Magazine last month.

A.P. Reid is the only Atlantic Canadian brokerage to make the top 10. Brokerages are judged on areas of business such as revenue growth, revenue per broker, client growth, and policy growth.

“As an Atlantic Canadian based national insurance brokerage, it’s a great honour for us,” said company president and CEO Jamie Reid in a news release Tuesday.

“We’ve worked tirelessly over the last seven years to build a first-class, national organization capable of competing with the large national and multi-national insurance brokerages from Ontario and Western Canada.”

A.P. Reid was established more than 30 years ago by Reid’s mother, Aileen, who as a single parent started the business from scratch.

“She had no financial resources to start. She built this business one customer at a time based on exceptional customer service and the tenacity to overcome any challenge that was thrown her way,” said Reid.

After working with his mother for nearly 20 years, Reid bought the firm from her in 2010, with a plan to expand nationally, dubbed ‘Vision 2020.”

As part of Reid’s growth plans, the company established their first office outside Atlantic Canada in 2014, with the acquisition of the Robert C. Davis Insurance brokerage in Ontario. In 2015 they purchased two group auto and home insurance portfolios, and established another office in Edmonton.

Last year they acquired Robinson Insurance Brokerage in Edmonton.

In addition to the company’s physical expansion, A.P. Reid has also grown its product offerings, introducing, its online tenant insurance platform, and establishing MyGroup Auto and Home Insurance, its group insurance division.
