What is CEE Tier III?

images[6]When it comes to purchasing a new appliance, smart consumers have learned to look for the ENERGY STAR® certification. But for most, the CEE Tiers still remain a mystery.

The Consortium of Energy Efficiency (CEE) has developed a series of tiers to identify appliances that exceed the standards of ENERGY STAR®. The grading system ranges from Tier I to Tier III based on an appliance’s energy consumption, and models are grouped by size and features to ensure a fair comparison.

While Tier I fridges are 20% more efficient than the federal minimum energy standards set for manufacturers, Tier III fridges are a whopping 30% more efficient and therefore represent the most efficient group of models available.

It’s worth noting that the CEE Tier is not usually listed on appliance labels. However there may be mention of “Type”, a different classification relating to door arrangement, water dispensers, etc. To check the Tier of an ENERGY STAR® fridge, visit www.cee1.org.
