Halifax builder considers the future of parking while including amenities for the present
The $105-million Southwest Properties apartment complex under construction on the Halifax waterfront doesn’t have an above-ground parkade just because excavation that close to the harbour would cost twice as much.
Southwest has a 99-year lease on the land with Develop Nova Scotia, so one level of the garage is extra tall in case significantly fewer people own cars in the future. That level was designed so it could be converted into another storey of residential space.
In the short term, though, the Cunard will have apartments on 13 of its 16 storeys, along with retail on the ground floor, plus the parking.
The project is on the site of the oil company and steamship line named for Samuel Cunard.
